On the date's of June 27, 28, 29, and 30; Elvis made one of the biggest comebacks of all rock n' roll history. What many people don't know is that This program is usually referred to as The "68 Special" or "The 68 Comeback". The actual name of this landmark television special was "Elvis". After returning from the army, Elvis went straight into movies. There were films after films, after films. When the Beatles made their debut in the mid 60's, Elvis began to fear that "Elvis" would no longer exist. Although he was wrong, Elvis still felt that he should put off filming and return to music. The "Comeback Special" turned into one of the greatest un-plugged performances of all times. Not that Elvis' career was suffering, but the special really helped Elvis' image in many ways. Although the special was taped in June, it aired on NBC on December 3, 1968. It had been over 7 years since Elvis appeared on stage in front of a live audience. This performance was Elvis' way of reclaiming his title as "King Of Rock N' Roll". Elvis was reunited with his past band mates Scotty Moore, his original Guitar player; and D.J. Fontana, one of his original Drummers. They sit on a small stage surrounded by a live audience. Elvis wears the famous black, all leather suit designed by Bill Belew, whom designed all of Elvis' out-fit's until the King's death. Elvis introduces new material as well as past material and reminisces about his career. Originally, Colonel Tom Parker, Elvis' manager, insisted on Elvis doing a medely of Chrismas carols for the whole show. The producers rejected the request and thought that since it is Elvis' return to music, he should do reunion of his past music to present (1968) music. Elvis and the band, did a mixture of Rock N' Roll, Country, Rythim and Blues, and Gospel. Elvis did song's such as: "Trouble", "That's Alright", "Heartbreak Hotel", "Guitar Man", "Jailhouse Rock", "All Shook Up", and many, MANY more! For a finale, Elvis sing's "If I Can Dream". This song was written just for this special. This song is about passion, strive and commitment to making your dreams come true. Elvis thought the words were perfect for this program. Elvis especially liked THIS special for he could play the roll of his favorite character..."Himself".
